Abstract

583,756. Work - holders. COTTING- HAM, R. F. Nov. 29, 1944, No. 23808. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a clamping-dog, the arm 1, Fig. 1, has a transverse semicircular recess 2 in its upper face communicating with an inverted V slot 3, formed underneath. A housing 4 at each end of the arm carries on a pin 6 cylinders 5 which have flats 7 and are free to rotate. The centre support is provided by a bolt 8 securing a trunion 13, having a flat 14 to seat nut 15, in recess 2. In a modification, the ends of the clamping arm are forked to carry the cylinders, and a hook bolt adjustably supported in a pillar co-operates with the flat on one cylinder, and is clamped to the worktable by a screw and nut. The opposite end of the arm carries a trunnion, mounted on a bolt, and secured by a nut to forrn a fulcrum. A forked housing fits the centre V-slot and is through a trunnion in recess 2 by a set-screw. The fork of the housing carries the work-contacting pressure cylinder. In a further modification, a pair of bowed clamp arms 25, Fig. 5, are pivoted together at one end 26 and their free ends are provided with housings for flattened cylinders 5, which contact the work 16. Pressure is applied by a bolt 8 passing through trunnions 13 in recesses 2 in the arms. Rotary elements may be spherical or polygonal and the flats may be serrated or otherwise roughened. The V-slot can be conical and the recess of spherical form.
