Abstract

713,966. Gauging alignment of connecting- rods. JERRAM; W. A. Sept. 30, 1952 [Nov. 2, 1951], No. 25695/51. Class 106 (2) A gauge for testing alignment of connecting- rods also comprises a clamping means so that adjustments to the alignment of a connecting rod may be made by applying a bending force without straining the bearing or mandrel on which it is mounted. A mandrel c is screwed into a base a and is internally threaded to receive a screwed rod f the point k of which expands a set of three members, two, of which, hand i are shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A tommy bar g is fitted to the screwed rod f to make an adjustable mandrel the effective diameter of which may be adjusted within limits to accommodate different sizes of connecting rods, which are then clamped rigidly between members x. A pointer t is adjustably held on a rod 2 and is slidable in a slot u, Fig. 2, in the web b. In use the connecting rod to be tested is mounted on the adjustable mandrel between the members x x and then clamped in position. The pointer t is adjusted to the centre line of the rod at the big end bearing, and the pointer and rod z are then adjusted to the top of the connecting rod by means of the slot u and the pointer indicates whether the top end of the connecting rod is in alignment with the big end bearing. According to the characteristic feature of the invention adjustable screw clamps d and w are provided on the adjustable mandrel to hold the big end securely while adjustments are made to correct any misalignment in the connecting rod. Fig. 3 shows a further clamp 1 which is adjusted on a gudgeon pin 2 fitted in the little end of the connecting rod 3 and secured by clamps 6, 7. Rotatably mounted in the clamp 1 is a rod 9 having a knurled handle 13 and a pair of pins 11, 12, mounted on a cross-piece 10. In use the clamp is fixed to the connecting rod as shown and the rod 9 is rotated while the distance of the pins 11, 12 from the vertical web b of the gauge is noted, any misalignment being shown by variations in distance between the tips of the pins 11, 12, and the web b.
