Abstract
583,591. Gas turbines. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and FORSYTH, A. G. Nov. 7, 1944, No. 21841. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1943. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A gas turbine plant, for the optional drive of an air-screw and for jet propulsion of aircraft, comprises an inner, contra-rotational compressor 15, with all the blades of equal length and an outer turbine 18 with a conical bladecarrying stator. The exhaust passes to propulsion jets 24. The inner compressor rotor 10 and the rotor 14, which carries the turbine blades and the outer blades of the compressor, are geared together to rotate in opposite directions by the bevel differential gear 53. The central pinions of the gear are carried by a cage controlled by a clutch 59. When the cage is free the gear is inoperative. The plant drives a shaft 27 which carries an airscrew 33, through an epicyclic reduction gear 46 between it and a shaft 50 which is integral with the rotor 14. In one form, the gear 53 is omitted and the rotor 10 is coupled by a short shaft to the shaft 27. The airscrew is coupled and uncoupled from the drive by means of a dogclutch 42 moved axially by a piston 37 in cylinder 36.
