Abstract
582,636. Measuring surface irregularities. KAPELLA, Ltd., and REASON, R.- E. April 6, 1944, No. 6508. [Class 106 (ii)] In an apparatus for measuring the surface irregularities of a cylinder A<2>, the cylinder is supported on adjustable abutments C', C<2>, Fig. 5, and is rotated by a motor F through a flexible drive G<1>, the radial movements of a stylus M<1> bearing on the cylinder being indicated and recorded by known means. The irregularities the apparatus is intended to measure are those caused by recurring high spots on the surface which form a series of equally-spaced lobes. The most useful measurement is given when certain relations, detailed in the Specification, obtain between the number of lobes and the angle subtended at the centre of the cylinder by the abutment contact pointer. The abutments C', C<2> are radially and angularly adjustable on a support C adjustable along a bed E. The stylus M<1> engages the cylinder in the same vertical plane as the abutments, the stylus being carried by a pick-up head M vertically adjustable on a pillar K<1> and having detector mechanism of the kind, described in Specifications 539,271 and 539,274, [both in Group XXXVIII]. The outer end of the cylinder is supported by an adjustable plate H. In a modification, the adjustable abutments are replaced by a plurality of V-blocks of different angles carried on a member which can be rotated to bring any block into position beneath the cylinder.
