Abstract

989, 707. Surface gauges. PORTAGE MACHINE CO. March 2, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8796/64. Heading G1M. A testing machine comprises an arm 50 transversely supported on a column 30 for vertical movement relative thereto, a base 11 on which the column 30 is mounted for movement in a direction at right angles to the plane, in which the arm 50 moves and a probe 70 mounted at one end of the arm and including an element 105 for sensing the contours of a workpiece, the arm including means for rotating the probe 70 and the machine further inducing means for measuring the deflection of the element 105 relative to the probe 70 on rotation thereof when the element 105 is in contact with a workpiece. As shown in Fig. 1, the column 30 of the machine 10 is slidably mounted in tracks 24 of a cross-slide unit 21 and also is movable at right angle to track 24 along tracks 20. Vertical tracks 31 are provided on the column 30 for movement of the bracket 32 supporting the arm 50 and probe 70. As shown in Fig. 2, a tube 71 extending through the arm 50 carries a cable 71 from commutator rings 66 to the contact element 105. The element 105 pivotally mounted at 105a to the probe 70 which is itself pivoted to a carrier block 99. A disc 64 having four faces 64x is provided to locate the position of the probe 70. In use, the face 14 of the workpiece is positioned at right angles with respect to the arm 50 and the element 105 moved until it lies at a distance from the axis of the tube 71 equal to the radius of the bore 13. The probe is then inserted into the bore by forward movement of the device on tracks 24. Disc 64 is subsequently rorotated until notch 63d engages a detent 63f to move the face 64xx into the position shown in Fig. 2. The probe is then either moved transversely or rotated and the required readings measured by amplifier means (not described). In a modified machine see Fig. 5, the specimen is situated on a rotatable table 130 slidably mounted on tracks 123. A magnifying window 129 is provided to read the distance moved by block 124.
