An apparatus for measuring the thickness of a tube 81 comprises a tube carrier 6 Fig. 1 (not shown) for locking the tube in the measuring position and two feelers 9, 11 contacting the inner and outer surfaces respectively of the wall of the tube to be measured, each feeler being attached to one of the ends of a straight arm 8, 10 pivotally mounted on a carriage 12 moving in a direction parallel to the axis of the tube, which also has elements for restoring the arms to a position in which the feelers are brought towards one another and detectors for recording the distances between each arm and consequently each feeler. Means are also provided for moving the feelers apart to allow the tube to be positioned on the feelers. The carriage 12 is rigidly connected to a nut 14 driven translationally by rotating a screw 16 connected to a motor 20. Each feeler arm 8, 10 is mounted in a sleeve 8b or 10b which is pivoted to the carriage 12 at 34. Between the pivot 34 and a guide ring 30 these are provided springs which tend to separate the sleeves 8b, 10b and hence bring the feelers together. The feelers are moved apart by electromagnetics which pull the lower part of the sleeves together. The sleeves are in contact with the contact members of detectors 66 for the continuous recording of their movements. Toothed gearwheels 68, 70 are provided to record by means of contacts 72, 74 the axial distance covered by the feelers. The tube 81 is held in place by means of two sets of three rollers one of each set being adjustable. When the tube is in place and the feelers are moved up to the end of the tube the electromagnetics are excited to bring the feelers into contact with the tube and the motor started to raise the carriage to move the feelers along the tube.
