582,396. Steam-engine reversing gear. BEYER, PEACOCK, & CO., Ltd., and HADFIELD, J. Oct. 7, 1944, No. 19273. [Class 122 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXII] In a reversing gear for steam locomotives comprising a steam, compressed air or other power unit A and a hydraulic locking cylinder B, liquid under pressure is supplied to the lowest points U of each end of cylinder B to ensure that all air is evacuated during filling and leakage is made up. Filling is effected by a hand pump P, the plunger of which is spring loaded and thereby maintains a constant pressure on the liquid to make up leakage automatically. The valves K and L of the power unit and locking cylinder are connected to an operating lever E in the driver's cab. The valve L for connecting the ends of cylinder B may be in the form of two cam operated spring loaded poppet valves or a piston valve. The rate of flow between the cylinder ends may be controlled by a throttling plug in the connecting passage.
