Abstract
581,744. Torpedo nets. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and PAGE, C. A. June 8, 1943, No. 9208. [Class 113 (i)] A torpedo net is supported with its head rope 4 under tension at approximately sea level in a fore-and-aft direction alongside the vessel by means of scuds 3, 5 with substantially flat vertical inboard surfaces 12' connected to the vessel by tow ropes 6, 9 and bridles 6a, 9a. Intermediate streamlined floats 3a unconnected to the vessel may also be provided on the head rope. Each scud 3, 5 has a substantially quarter elliptical outer surface 13, a vertical heel plate 17 with an opening 19 adjacent a forwardly and outwardly directed fixed rudder 18, and shackles 25 to anchor the head and end'ropes. Each scud may be compartmented to receive water ballast for varying its buoyancy, and provided with a tripping line 24 for changing the direction of the net or for bringing it alongside the vessel. The two leading ropes 6 may be connected to an adjustable bowsprit, and the two leading scuds 5, 3 may be provided with a light cross-spar to give an initial directional lead when launching and to maintain'the direction when under tow. Each intermediate float 3a has curvilinear side walls 21 and a base 22 with a central channel 23 to accommodate the head rope 4. The foot rope' or other lower part of the 'net is weighted by means of drogues or the like.
