Abstract
Refractory articles substantially free from uncombined carbon and ceramic bonds are made from silicon carbide particles bonded by a metal alloy capable of forming an oxidation-resistant glaze on the surface. The alloy, which is incorporated in the form of a fine powder, may be an alloy of manganese or one of the alloys used as deoxidizers in steel founding, e.g., ferro-manganese-silicon, silico-manganese, ferro-manganese, spiegeleisen, silico-spiegel, manganese-copper, ferro-silicon, calcium-silicon, calcium-manganese-silicon, barium-silicon, nickel-zirconium, or zirconium-silicon alloys. Preferably 0.5-10 per cent. of the metal is added, although up to 50 per cent. may be employed when high thermal conductivity is required as in the manufacture of furnace muffles. One or more clays can be added to the composition, or part of the silicon carbide can be replaced by a refractory oxide, silicate, or spinel, the amount of these materials being less than 10 per cent.
