Abstract

581,340. Coated fabrics; compound sheet materials. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 18, 1943, No. 19291. Convention date, June 30. [Class 140] A pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises a flexible film backing 11 coated on one side with the adhesive 12, a fibrous reinforcing layer 13 united to the film or embedded in the adhesive layer, and a narrow masking strip of film 14 overlying the central area of the adhesive leaving two marginal strips of adhesive exposed. The tape is used for holding a row of rivets in position in their holes before and during the heading operation, the riveting gun being applied against the backing 11 and the non-adhesive central strip of film 14 contacting the rivet heads. The tape is readily. pulled off after heading. The complete tape may be transparent, the backing and masking strip being of transparent film, and the fibrous reinforcement of tissue paper, loose fibres, or thin cloth embedded in a transparent adhesive, e.g. rubber with a lesser proportion of rosin or ester gum, or polyisobutylene, hydrogenated coumaroneindene resin, and, if desired, rubber. The film may be regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, butyrate, or aceto-butyrate, ethyl cellulose, rubber hydrochloride, nylon, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, acetate, or their interpolymer, or polyvinyl butyral. The backing film 11 may be cast from solution upon the reinforced adhesive layer. Specification 514,402 is referred to.
