Abstract

748,662. Puncture-repair patches. BOYCE, R. D. Aug. 13, 1954 [Aug. 28, 1953], No. 23860/53. Class 144 (1). [Also in Group VIII] An adhesive repair patch 10, e.g. for mending punctures in pneumatic tyres, has its front (operative) face coated with a first adhesive layer 11 and protected by a first layer of sheet material 12 and its rear face protected by a second adhering layer of sheet material 13 having second and third adhesive layers 15, 14 disposed side-by-side thereon, the bond provided by the second adhesive 15 being more tenacious, and the bond provided by the third adhesive 14 being less tenacious, than the bond provided by the first adhesive 11. The patch 10 may be of rubber while the protective layers 12, 13, which extend beyond the margin of the patch are of metal foil and paper. The adhesives 14, 15 may be identified, e.g. by printing or by different colours. In use, the paper and patch are first peeled away from the metal foil as shown, starting at the " strong " adhesive end, and then applied to the surface of an article where, by means of the adhesive 11, the patch becomes securely affixed, the bond being more tenacious than that between the " strong adhesive 15 and the patch. The paper layer 13, together with its adhesive layers, is then peeled away from the patch starting at the " weak " adhesive end. A number of the patches may be mounted at intervals between strips of foil and paper. The strong and weak adhesives may be carried on two separate strips lying side-by-side.
