608,127. Adhesive sheets. JOHNSON & JOHNSON (GT. BRITAIN), Ltd. Dec. 18, 1944, No. 25411. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1943. [Class 140] An adhesive sheet has a flexible backing presenting smooth non-fibrous surfaces, a normally tacky polyvinyl acetal or polyvinyl ether adhesive directly united to the backing on one surface thereof and a flexible film of a cellulose ether or ester united to the opposite surface whereby when a plurality of layers of the adhesive sheets are arranged in close superposed relation the film serves as a repellent eliminating the risk of permanent joinder of the adhesive of one layer to the backing of the adjacent layer. As backings regenerated cellulose and rubber derivatives are indicated and to these polyvinyl adhesives as disclosed in Specification 585,481; or polyvinyl ether adhesives comprising polyvinyl ethers, tackifiers and commercial rubber anti-oxidants may be applied by solvent or hot melt spreading. The repellent film is applied to the backing by similar methods, or by attachment of a preformed layer of repellent to the backing by means of heat, either before or after the adhesive is applied to the opposite surface of the backing. As repellents nitrocellulose, methyl cellulose and cellulose acetate have proved very satisfactory. Nitrocellulose used on a backing of regenerated cellulose may havea plasticizer such as a modified glycerolphthalic anhydride resin and a trace of wax included in it. The adhesive-repellents may be anchored to backing material by an agglutinant such as polyvinyl alcohol, casein and glue. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 indicates also the use of adhesives containing rubber, synthetic rubber, vinyl polymers, butadiene-vinyl copolymers, polyvinyl esters, alkyd type adhesives and glue; and adhesive-repellent films or coats made from acrylic polymers such as methyl methacrylate or methyl acrylate and butadiene copolymers, preferably the commercial dispersions of copolymers of butadiene and styrene, or acrylonitriles. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
