597,327. Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape. JOHNSON & JOHNSON (GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd. May 12, 1944, No. 9138. Convention date, May 13, 1943. [Class 140] A pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet or tape having a backing of woven glass fabric which is slit in the course of manufacture with a cutting tool has a binder coating applied to at least one surface prior to the slitting operation to prevent fraying out of the newly-formed edges and to prevent the formation of dust. The binder coating may comprise cellulose ethers such as ethyl or methyl cellulose ; cellulose esters such as the acetate or nitrate or polyvinyl esters such as the acetate or chloride, and may be applied, preferably to one surface of the glass fabric, by calendering, hot melt or solvent spreading or by brush. Solvent spreading is preferred ; ethyl cellulose dissolved in toluol or other aromatic solvent, methyl ethyl ketone or alcohol may be so applied, and a plasticiser such as castor oil, a condensation product of castor oil maleic acid or its anhydride and a monohydric terpene alcohol, dibutyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate or mixtures thereof may be incorporated in the ethyl cellulose. Cellulose acetate with Santicizer M-17 (methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate) or Santicizer 8 (ortho and para toluene ethyl sulphonamides) as plasticiser and a mixture of acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and nitropropane as solvent ; polyvinyl acetate in acetone or polyvinyl chloride in a solvent such as chlorobenzene or cyclohexanone is also suitable. When hot melt spreading is used, waxes such as beeswax or paraffin wax may be added to the coating substances to ensure better flow. If desired, a pre-formed sheet of material such as cellulose acetate may be applied to one surface of the glass fabric. When the coating is applied in solution, the solvent is removed by heat. In manufacture, after application of the binder coating to the glass fabric a pressuresensitive adhesive mass, such as a specified reclaim composition, is applied to the other side of the fabric and this is then slit longitudinally into the desired widths and wound into rolls. The binder prevents mass transfer during storage.
