Abstract

An adhesive composition for a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises a semi-solid condensation product of castor oil with a half ester of maleic acid, and if desired a film-forming plastic, e.g. nitrocellulose or ethyl cellulose, and a tackifying resin, e.g. rosin, ester gum, dehydrogenated rosin, hydrogenated rosins, or the glycerine ester of hydrogenated rosin. The composition is dissolved in a solvent, e.g. toluene or butyl acetate, and spread on the backing. The condensation product may be prepared according to U.S.A. Specification 2,081,266 by heating castor oil, maleic acid or anhydride and an alcohol, e.g. a -terpineol, a mono-ether of diethylene glycol, octyl alcohol or a mixture of alcohols with a boiling range of 150-250 DEG C., and is brought to the semi-solid state by mechanical working, preferably at elevated temperature, e.g. 100-250 DEG C. The term semi-solid is defined in p the Specification in terms of measurements made with a rotation plastometer. Examples of suitable compositions are mixtures of (1) the condensation product of castor oil with the maleic anhydride half ester of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, nitrocellulose and the glycerine ester of hydrogenated rosin; (2) the condensation product of castor oil, maleic anhydride and a -terpineol and ethyl cellulose; (3) the condensation product of castor oil, maleic anhydride and cyclohexanol, ethyl cellulose and dehydrogenated rosin; (4) the condensation product of castor oil, maleic acid and a -terpineol, ethyl cellulose and ester gum.
