Abstract

Materials such as transparent cellulosic or protein films, textile fabrics, wood, or metal are coated with a composition comprising a cellulose derivative, a wax or the like and a hydrogenated rosin or a derivative thereof such as an ester. The hydrogenated rosin ester may be made by esterifying hydrogenated rosin or by hydrogenating the dissolved rosin ester. Suitable esters are those of polyhydric alcohols such as glycerine, ethylene, diethylene and trimethylene glycols, b -ethoxy- or b -methoxy-ethyl alcohol, and b -methoxy-b <1>-hydroxydiethyl ether or of monohydric alkyl or aralkyl alcohols such as methyl, stearyl, benzyl and naphthyl alcohols. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate, nitrate, or acetatenitrate, glycol-, ethyl- or benzyl-cellulose or ethyl cellulose nitrate. The wax may be Asiatic paraffin wax. Suitable solvent mixtures for the coating composition are ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and toluene or methyl-ethyl-ketone, cyclohexanone and b -methoxy-ethyl alcohol. Plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl adipate and butyl ortho-benzoylbenzoate may be added. The compositions may also be cast into films.
