Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises a conjugated diene-acrylonitrile elastomeric copolymer, a compatible solid tackifying agent, a plasticizer and an aryl sulphonamide resin, in amounts of 100 parts copolymer, 30 to 100 tackifying agent, 10 to 100 plasticizer and 20 to 150 parts aryl sulphonamide resin. Specified copolymers are butadiene acrylonitrile and a carboxylated butadiene-acrylonitrile, while a pine wood resin, a resin substituted phenol, a coumarone-indene resin, a heat hardened phenolic resin and a ketone base synthetic resin are specified tackifiers. Plasticizers listed are methyl benzyl ether, dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, epoxidized fatty acid esters or glycerides and polyesters, while an aryl sulphonamide-formaldehyde condensate is the specified sulphonamide resin. The adhesive composition may be used to coat tapes to produce decals.ALSO:A normally tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive tape which also has the initial mobility of a conventional decal after application to a substrate, comprises a flexible backing coated on at least one surface with an adhesive composition. The adhesive composition comprises 100 parts of a conjugated diene acrylonitrile copolymer, 30-100 parts of a tackifying agent, 10-100 parts of a plasticizer, and 20-150 parts of an aryl sulphonamide resin (see Division C3). The coating weight of the adhesive composition may be from 1,8 to 2,5 ozs. per sq. yard. The backing may be a metallized "Mylar" film and the adhesive anchored to the metallized side by a primer. Other backings may be cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-acetate copolymers, polyesters, polyamides, polychloroprene or unified impregnated or coated fibrous webs of paper or cloth. A release coating, e.g. a conventional silicone release coating, may be applied on the tape backing.
