Abstract

1297444 Laminates and labels THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORP 29 Oct 1970 [31 Dec 1969] 51590/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and B6] Laminates may be formed from fabrics, metals, wood, fibre and ceramics using as an adhesive a curable polymer composition essentially comprising (a) an inert organic solvent; (b) a curable blocked urethane-prepolymer; (c) a curing agent for the prepolymer and (d) a vinyl resin copolymer comprising 70 to 97 mol per cent of vinyl chloride, 3 to 20 mol per cent of vinyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids or C 1-6 alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid and 0 to 15 mol per cent of maleic fumaric, itaconic, crotonic, acrylic or methacrylic acid or a derivative thereof containing free carboxyl groups (see Division C3). The bonding surface of at least one of the laminate-forming sheets is coated with the composition, the solvent is evaporated, the coated surface is pressed against the opposing bonding surface and heat is applied to the sheets to unblock the blocked urethane prepolymer and to cure and thermoset it thereby adhering the sheets together. Alternatively a tape or film of the curable material may be placed between two sheets of material which are to be adhered together and a bond formed by the application of heat and pressure. A label may be formed by applying the composition to a release sheet and then laminating it to a woven or non-woven backing. The release sheet may be provided with a printed pattern which is transferred to the adhesive layer when the release sheet is stripped.
