Abstract

1357586 Laminates NORTON CO 9 Sept 1971 [10 Sept 1970] 42184/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] An adhesive tape comprises a layer of non- tacky hot melt adhesive and on one side thereof and in contact therewith a layer of tacky, pressure-sensitive adhesive, the pressure-sensitive adhesive being compatible with the hot melt adhesive at elevated temperature so that at elevated temperature the hot melt adhesive diffuses throughout the pressure-sensitive adhesive. The hot melt adhesive layer may be in contact with a release liner so that the tape is a transfer tape suitable for forming a splice between two members to be joined. Alternatively the adhesives may be coated on to a backing member optionally having arelease coating on its back surface, the hot melt adhesive being in contact with the backing member, and the pressure sensitive adhesive optionally being covered with a release liner. The backing member may be a polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate or cellulose acetate film, aluminium foil or impregnated paper, the hot melt adhesive may be a coumarone-indene resin, rosin or derivative thereof, a mineral, vegetable or petroleum wax, alkyd or terpene resin which may contain ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl acetate, polybutyl methacrylate, polyethylene, polystyrene, a styrene copolymer or polybutylene, or a polyamide derived from a dimerized fatty acid and a diamine per se, and the pressure sensitive adhesive may be natural rubber, styrene-butadiene, nitrile, polychloroprene or chlorosulphonated polyethylene rubber, a polyvinyl ether or polyacrylate, tackified with a hydrocarbon resin, polyterpene resin or hydrogenated rosin ester. In examples (1) polyethylene terephthalate is coated first with a mixture of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and polystyrene dissolved in toluene and then with a pressure sensitive adhesive comprising rubber, polyterpene resin, petroleum oil and polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline dispersed in toluene, (2) paper impregnated with a composition comprising butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, zinc oxide, sulphur, stearic acid, benzothiazyl disulphide and diethylhexyl phthalate dissolved in toluene and methyl ethyl ketone and cured is coated as in (1), the pressure sensitive adhesive also containing zinc oxide, (3) aluminium foil is coated first with a mixture of high molecular weight and low molecular weight polystyrene resins in toluene and then with a pressure sensitive adhesive comprising butadiene-styrene rubber, hydrogenated rosin ester, lanolin and phenyl-beta-naphthylamine dispersed in toluene and (4) unplasticized polyvinyl chloride film is coated as in (1). The tapes are pressed on to stainless steel substrates and heated to effect bonding.
