Abstract

A water-remoistenable adhesive-coated sheet of water-insoluble organic polymeric material having on at least one face a water-remoistenable adhesive coating comprises a layer of a water-activatable adhesive and a primer layer which is composed of water-insoluble synthetic resin and has good adhesion to the material of the sheet and to the adhesive, interposed between the layer of adhesive and the sheet and bonding the adhesive layer to the sheet. The sheet may be of a synthetic resin and the primer layer is composed of synthetic elastomer or a blend of synthetic elastomer with other polymeric materials. The primer layer may be a water-soluble organic polymer. The sheet may be a film of vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer and the primer layer comprises butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers alone or mixed with butadiene-styrene, or polyisoprene or acrylate polymers or copolymers, blends of phenolic resins with synthetic rubbers, and may contain a minor preportion of polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl pyrrolidone; of polyethylene terephthalate and the primer layer includes a blend of synthetic elastomer with a phenolic resin or a polyester; of polyethylene or polypropylene with an acrylate or butadiene styrene primer; or of cellulose acetate and the primer layer comprises acrylate polymers or copolymers, polyvinyl acetate or an epoxy resin. The water-activatable adhesive may be of natural or synthetic origin and may include gum arabic, karaya, or tragacanth and locust bean gum, gelatin, glue, casein, starch and its derivatives such as dextrin, cellulose derivatives such as methyl, ethyl, sodium carboxy methyl, hydroxyethyl, carboxymethylhydroxy ethyl and ethyl hydroxy ethyl cellulose, alginates, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid and its salts, polyacrylamides polyvinylmethyl ether, polymethylolacrylamides and ethylene oxide polymers.
