581,038. Tubular heat-exchangers. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., OWNER, F. M., and ROBERTS, L. M., and ROBERTS, R. A. (Representatives of ROBERTS, L. C.). July 28, 1944, No. 14469. [Class 64 (iii)] A heat-exchanger, e.g., for the gas turbine plant of an aircraft, comprises involute or other shaped rows of flat-sided straight tubes 12, Fig. 1, disposed within a cylindrical casing, the ends 14, Fig. 5, of the tubes being slotted and bent outwards in an arcuate or parabolic curve so that the tubes in each row and the tubes in adjacent rows may be welded together along the edges 13 and 14a respectively. The triangular spaces between the casing and the ends of the rows of tubes are sealed by a grooved ring 15, Fig. 6, having triangular parts formed with lips 17 adapted to be welded to the end tubes of the rows, and curved ridges 18 welded to the edges 14a. By this arrangement, the usual tube-plates are dispensed with and the arcuate or parabolic connections between the tubes in adjacent rows allow for relative expansion. In use, one fluid passes through the tubes while another flows through the passages 20 between the rows from the circumference of the casing to a central collector 11 and thence back to the circumference. In a modification, the tubes are of trapezoidal cross-section and the ends are machined so as to remove three sides thereof and leave one side which is bent over to form the arcuate connection between the tubes in adjacent rows.
