580,458. Compressors. ESCHER WYSS MASCHINENFABRIKEN AKT.-GES. June 21, 1944, No. 11793. Convention date, June 22, 1943. [Class 110 (i)] In a compressor having axial flow low pressure stages 1 and centrifugal high-pressure stages 5, surging at low outputs is prevented by withdrawing some of the compressed fluid between the high and low pressure parts. A branch pipe 6 draws off fluid from the delivery of a connecting member 3 and delivers it to the open air or to the suction side of the compressor through a cut-off valve 7 which is controlled automati-' cally in dependence on the pressure p2 prevailing at the delivery end of the low pressure part 1. The connecting member 3 may be a pipe but is preferably an intercooler as shown. When vapours are being compressed, condensate may be injected into the branch pipe 6 to lower the temperature of the vapour. The high and low pressure parts of the compressor may be housed in a common casing in which case the intercooler or other connecting member can be made integral with the casing.
