Abstract

719,990. Centrifugal pumps. NASH ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 17, 1952 [Oct. 18, 1951], No. 26092/52. Class 110(1) [Also in Group XXVIII] A vacuum apparatus comprises a two-stage liquid ring pump 10, Fig. 1, such as those described in Specifications 324,249 and 324,286. [both in Class 110(i)], drawing working gas at atmospheric pressure e.g., steam or air through a filter 36, a valved duct 34 and a nozzle 54. Fig. 3, together with an axially spaced diffuser 56 of an ejector 28 having its suction inlet 42 connected by a duct 38 to the system to be evacuated. In operation the pump 10 draws through a valved by-pass 98 until a gauge 40 registers a vacuum of 28.5 inches mercury gauge whereupon the by-pass is closed and the ejector increases the vacuum to 29.5 inches. The pump 10 normally discharges through a valved duct 102 to atmosphere but when evacuating gases which it is not desired should be mixed with air in the apparatus valves 32, 104 are closed and a valve 108 is opened to utilize the pump discharge at atmospheric pressure as working gas for the ejector. In a modification the suction inlet of the ejector is connected to the discharge end of a second ejector using air at atmospheric pressure as the working fluid and having its suction inlet connected to the discharge end of a third ejector also using atmospheric air as the working fluid and having its suction inlet connected to the system being evacuated.
