Abstract
937,349. Stuffing-box substitutes. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. Aug. 17, 1962 [Aug. 17, 1961], No. 29736/61. Class 122 (5). In a rotary gas pump the impeller shaft 4 is sealed by labyrinth glands 11 and 12 which, at points between their ends, communicate through pipes 13, 14 and 15 with an ejector 16 connected in a pipe 17 between the pump inlet 6 and outlet 7 whereby, when the pump is running, any gas leaking through the glands is withdrawn by the ejector and returned to the inlet 6. A vacuum governor 22 in the pipe 15 keeps the pressures at the points where the pipes 13 and 14 communicate with the glands at, or slightly above, atmospheric. When the pump is at rest, in order to prevent air leaking into the casing valve 23 is closed and valves 27 and 29 are opened and low pressure gas is fed into the system through a pipe 24, governor 25 and valves 26, 27, any gas leaking through the glands then being vented to atmosphere through a pipe 28 and flame trap 30.
