Abstract
580,180. Cycle brakes &c. McCRORY, F. S. A. Nov. 20, 1943, No. 19421. [Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (i)] A twist-grip holder K on the handle-bar A for operating the brakes, or the brakes and variable-speed gear, of a bicycle has an inward projection J engaging an inclined slot F in a slidable sleeve E, Fig. 7, to which the brake operating cable R is attached at G, and which is prevented from rotation by projections Q engaging horizontal slots L in a sleeve B fixed to the handle-bars by screws D, and a lock M on the rotatable holder K registers with a keeper C on the fixed sleeve B when the holder is turned to the brake-applying position so that the parts can be locked in this position by a key to prevent theft. The slidable sleeve E may be omitted, the inclined slot F being formed in the fixed sleeve B so that the holder moves outwards as it is turned to apply the brake, the cable being connected directly to the holder. In Figs. 9 and 11, both the brakes and the variablespeed gear are controlled, the holder being in two parts.K', K<2> rotatable in opposite directions. The part K<1> operates the brakes through a sliding sleeve with an inclined slot F' and a connector G' for the brake cable R<1>. The part K<2> has an inward projection J<2> engaging an inclined slot F<2> on a second sleeve prevented from rotation by projections Q<2> engaging horizontal slots L'. The cable R<2> operating the variable-speed gear is connected to the second sleeve at G<2> and passes through an aperture G<3> in the end of the first sleeve. Recesses M<2> in the slot F<2> engage the projection J<2> at the various gear positions. The cable holders G, G<2> are adjustable.
