Abstract
579,590. Rotary valves. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 3, 1945, No. 267. Convention date, Jan. 7, 1944. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] In: an engine having a rotatable valve in a cylinder head in which the valve and head have different coefficients of thermal expansion a metal ring or annular member controls the rate of expansion of the head relative to an adjacent portion of the valve. A frusto-conical rotatable valve 41' made of cast iron or ferrous metal is disposed in an aluminium head 27 having an annular boss 31, around its lower end, provided with a recess 32 receiving a steel ring 33. The ring is exposed to the cooling fluid in a chamber 29 which communicates with the cylinder jacket 25 and has extensions 29a, 29b around and between the inner ends of the inlet and exhaust passages 46, 45. The head is secured by bolts 38 traversing ribs 36, 37 and the ring 33 is notched at 33a to provide clearance for a gasket 34. The combustion chamber 42 is formed in the valve 41 and cooled by metallic sodium in a chamber 48. An annular relief 70 extending for the height of the valve part 43 is formed in the valve or in the head. The valve is held against its seating by a spring 52 engaging a steel coupling disk 53 which drives the valve through teeth 54 and is itself rotated from a gear 58 through a ring 57.
