Abstract
579,664. Cylinder heads. DEHN, F. B. (Continental Aviation & Engineering Corporation). Oct. 26, 1943, No. 17679. [Class 7 (ii)] A cylinder-head for liquid-cooled internalcombustion engines, particularly aircraft engines, comprises a body portion A forged between dies which meet along the median line 10, the outer wall of the cooling jacket C being formed from a number of sheet metal stampings which are of a shape complementary to the exterior surface of the forged head and which are secured against seatings provided on the body portion. The forging may be of aluminium and the combustion chamber 12, bores 16 for valve guides, valve seat portions' 13 and inlet and exhaust passages 14, 15 may be machined after forging. The body has on each side outwardly projecting ribs which substantially follow the body contour but are curved inwardly at 17a so that the inlet valve vicinity is not included within the cooling jacket. The flanges 20 of the stampings seat against ribs 17 and are preferably welded thereto at 21. The body is provided with spark plug inserts 43, Fig. 8, located in bosses 40 to the rims of which the stampings may be welded at 46. In some cases a mechanical joint including a gland member 53, Fig. 12, secured by a flanged plug insert 55 may be used. In a modification the jacket stampings are secured by Neoprene gaskets bonded to the ribs 17 and to flanges on the stampings.
