Abstract

949,762. Making 1.C. engines. NATIONAL LEAD CO. April 9, 1962 [April 11, 1961], No. 13544/62. Heading B3A. An engine block comprises an upper casting 10, Fig. 1, including a deck plate 14 and cylinder barrels 12, and a lower casting 24 including portions of a crank-shaft housing 26 and an outer cooling chamber wall 28, the castings when assembled forming a water-tight cooling chamber between the cylinder barrels and the outer cooling chamber wall. The deck plate 14, Fig. 3, has openings 16, 18 for the passage of bolts, cooling water and push rods. Each cylinder may have an internal cast iron liner and adjacent cylinders may be joined by a cast web. Different aluminium alloys may be used for the upper and lower castings and the upper casting may be bolted to the lower casting before the cylinder head 44 is attached. Upper and lower joints are formed on gaskets 40, 36. In another embodiment the securing bolts pass outside the deck plate and the lower joint is formed by tapered mating surfaces bonded by an epoxy resin bonding agent. In a further embodiment the outer cooling chamber wall has upper and lower sections 54, 56, Fig. 4, which seat on gasket 62 and the lower joint is made by O-rings 70, the arrangement permitting longitudinal thermal expansion.
