Abstract
579,478. Slide rules. LOCK, R. H. April 26, 1944, No. 7793. [Class 106 (i)] In a cylindrical calculator of the type comprising helical logarithmic scales 5, 7 marked on cylindrical slide members 1, 2, one of which is axially slidable and rotatable within the other, and a tubular cursor 3 extending over the joint between the slide members and moving over the scales, an axially extending scale 8, uniformly divided at intervals equal to the pitch of the helical scale, is marked on one or each of the slide members, and the cursor 3 is marked with a uniformly divided helical scale or scales 10 conforming to the helical scales 5, 7 of the slide members and marked with numerical subdivisions. By setting the zero, 4 or 6, of the cursor over the position on the helical scale, 5 or 7, representing the number of which the logarithm is required, the mantissa can be read from the scales 9' and 10. The numbers on the uniform scale 9 may be of a distinguishing colour. The ends of the cursor may be transparent and the helical scale 10 marked at or near the end.
