Abstract

Slide-rules.-A cylindrical rule is marked with two similar sets of scales A B C D, E F G H, shown developed in Fig. 2, and is provided with a slide comprising a transparent tube T, Fig. 1, graduated with one or two sets of scales exactly similar to those on the cylinder. Each set comprises ten scales equispaced round the periphery and is divided proportionately to the logarithms of the numbers from 0 to 1; the sets are displaced relatively a distance equal to that between the scales. The spaces between the scales are of such a width that the scales on the tube may fit in between those on the cylinder; the logarithms of the numbers on the cylinder and of trigonometrical functions may be marked between the scales. A cursor, in the form of a second short tube sliding on the tube T, may be fitted.
