A slide rule solves the formulµ where m, v are the off-centre distances of measuring and vanishing points respectively in a perspective drawing of width p with a 60 degrees angle of view, and a is the angle between the picture plane and the line to be foreshortened. The rule consists of a cylindrical rod on which is marked a circumferential reference line, a circumferential linear scale giving the angle a and a pair of curves intersecting at a = 60 degrees on the angle scale. A transparent sleeve enclosing the cylinder carries a logarithmic scale. The sleeve is set so that the reference line on the cylinder is against the given value of p, and is then rotated so that the logarithmic scale is against the given value of a on the angle scale. The intersections of the curves with the logarithmic scale give the value of m and v. Additional curves may be provided on the cylinder to give the distance between vanishing points or to indicate 45 degrees, or other vanishing points.
