579,359. Pyrophoric lighters. ALDAM, R. J., and MANON (NOVELTIES), Ltd. March 29, 1944, No. 5839. [Class 75 (iii)] In a pyrophoric lighter shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the depression of a toothed plunger 4 in the fuel tank casing 1 against the resistance of a spring 5 rocks a toothed shutter 22 normally covering the wick through gearwheels 13, 16 and operates an abrading wheel 19 engaging a spring- pressed flint 26 through gear wheels 12, 15, 17 and pawl formed by a spring washer 20. The spindles 9, 10, 11 carrying the gear wheels 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 friction wheel 19 and shutters 22 are mounted in half-bearings in the upper edge of the casing, the upper halves of the bearings being formed in the sides of a hood 29 preferably detachably secured by a spring clip 33 to a plate 30 carried by a post 31 on the casing 1. The shutter 22 carries a wick cap 23 and when operated turns into the hood 29. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the wheel 17 engages rack teeth on a sliding shutter 22a guided in grooves in the upper part of the casing 1 and a gearwheel on the spindle 11 carries an arm 38 supporting the wick cap 23. The upper part of the casing 1 may be provided with air holes normally masked by the shutter and a compartment for an auxiliary fuel tank may be formed in the casing.
