Abstract
579,150. Recoil apparatus for guns. VIALE, S. M. June 1, 1939, No. 16206. [Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for regulating the air pressure in a chamber 12 in open communication with the recoil cylinder 10 of an aircraft gun, so as to maintain the normal and the maximum pressures in the chamber under varying temperature conditions, includes an air reservoir 14, the pressure in which is between the normal and the maximum in the chamber, and a spring- loaded valve 15 controlling automatically communication between the reservoir and the chamber. The valve 15 is controlled by a spring-loaded diaphragm 17 carrying a spindle 19, the upper end of which coacts with an abutment 21 loaded through toggles 22 by springs 23, while its lower end engages a lever 25 pivoted to the valve 15 and having fulcra 26, 27. When the aircraft climbs, the consequent fall in temperature results in a pressure drop in the chamber 12 so that the diaphragm moves down and opens the valve 15 to admit air from the reservoir to the chamber. An increase in temperature causes the diaphragm to rise to again open the valve and permit air to pass from the chamber into the reservoir. In a modification, communication between the chamber 12 and the reservoir 14 is controlled by two valves, one allocated to each direction of transfer of air.
