Abstract

578,836. Aerial barrage mines. GRAHAM, A. April 1, 1938, No. 10039. [Class 9 (ii)] An explosive mine 1 for attachment as at 6 to an aerial barrage cable is of lenticular form so that the sharp edge 4 of the mine can penetrate the wing of the impacting enemy aircraft. The fuze mechanism contained in a cylindrical housing 5 comprises a spring striker 7 for firing a detonator 8 for the explosive charge in the mine casing. The striker piston 11 is held by a shear wire 12 passing through a ball 14 and a firing-lever 13 on the ball. An arming-lever 16 pivoted at 17 rotates when the mine swings round the aircraft wing after impact has severed the cable. The striker then registers with a hole 18 and the mine is fired when the firing-lever is deflected by the entry of the mine into the wing or by inertia if a solid part of the wing is struck.
