Abstract

578,746. Rolling. TRIGGS, W. W. (Sandvikens Jernverks Aktiebolag). March 16, 1943, No. 4285. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 12, 1943.] [Class 83 (iv)] Mills with small operative rolls backed up by series of auxiliary rolls of increasing diameter employ the same number of rolls in the outermost series as in the adjacent series, and the rolls in the latter series are supported in separate guided bearings displaceable radially. The operative rolls 1, Fig. 1, are driven from beyond the housing and are supported by the work a and by backing-rolls 2, 2<1>. Further backing- rolls 4, 6 and 4<11>, 6<11> have their axes in the same plane as those of the rolls 2, 2<1> respectively. Other backing-rolls 4<1>, 6<1> are symmetrically arranged as shown. Absence of lateral thrust on the rolls 4, 4<1> and 4<11> enables them to be guided in the housing. The upper part 10 of the housing is adjustable bodily with relation to the lower part and may be hinged to swing back. A modification employing ten rolls only is described. The rolls, particularly the outermost, may be in sleeve form supported by needle rollers 12, Fig. 4, guided by flanges 14 of non-rotating spindles 13. The outer flanges brace the housing cheeks 10 against the pressure of the tie bolts 15.
