Abstract

578,262. Supplying fuel, air, water, &c. ASIATIC PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., LUBBOCK, I., and GOLLIN, G. J. Nov. 7, 1941, No. 14404. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Means are provided for controlling the supply of liquid fuel and a liquid oxidant to combustion apparatus, particularly in jet propulsion apparatus, whereby the liquids are caused to arrive in the combustion chamber in timed relationship to each other and to the actuation of the igniting-means. In the form shown, liquid oxidant is supplied from a container 8, liquid fuel from a container 9, and a diluent liquid such as water from a container 10, by pipes 11, 12, 13 to nozzle 3 in the combustion chamber 1. In operation, a high-pressure inert gas, such as nitrogen, in a container 4 is released by the operation of a valve 5, for example an explosive-actuated valve as described in Specification 578,006, [Group XXIX], operated electrically together with igniting-means 2, the gas pressure passing through a reducing-valve 6 and choke 7 to diaphragms a', a', a', which are thereby ruptured, so that the gas pressure acts on the liquids in the containers 8, 9, 10 and forces them through chokes B1, B2, B3 in the pipes 11, 12, 13. The liquids then rupture diaphragms A1, A2, A3 arranged in these pipes at varying distances from the nozzles 3, so that the liquids arrive at the nozzles in the desired timed relationship, preferably the oxidant first, then the fuel, and finally the diluent after combustion has started. Rupturing diaphragms as described in Specification 578,008, [Group XXIX]; may be used, and an igniter as described in Specification 578,261, the nozzles 3 may be constructed as described in Specification 578,293, and the water supplied as in Specification 578,263. [Group XXXIII].
