[Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XXI] An ejection device for inflammable liquid particularly for use as a flame thrower in war, comprises an internally tapered nozzle, having a central tapered valve opened by the pressure of the liquid, acting on a piston on the valve stem and means for igniting the liquid. The central portion may be hollow to allow a readily inflammable liquid, such as petrol to be discharged therethrough to cause ignition of the liquid later discharged through the annular space in the nozzle after the central plunger has been retracted. When a solid plunger is used, however, the liquid is atomised at the nozzle and mixed with air and is then readily ignitable at the beginning of the discharge and is ignited by an igniter 41 on the nozzle; a cross jet of petrol from a nozzle 40 may however be directed across the stream to aid the ignition. The central plunger is tapered at'its rear end to increase the velocity of the liquid at the nozzle and the rod 3 has a piston 42 at its rear end adapted to be retracted against spring resistance to abut' against an adjustable stop 45 by the pressure of the liquid supplied through an aperture 43 from the supply vessel, which is subjected to pressure of carbon dioxide. For high pressure svstems the release and shut off valve for the liquid may be automatically actuated by a plunger 33 movable in a cylinder under the pressure of the gas. The valve consists of an obturator 29 and a gate valve 30, Fig. 4. The valve rod may actuate a switch 38 through a lever 34 to cause ignition of the liquid by a device 41 disposed at the nozzle and simultaneously a jet of petrol from a pump 40 may be projected across the stream of liquid by another lever also actuated by the valve rod.
