[Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XXI] A flame thrower comprises a double hollow nozzle through which the liquids to burn are ejected from a pressure container, so that a core of readily inflammable liquid such as petrol is ejected with a sheath of less inflammable or non- inflammable heavy oil, thus preventing the flame from back firing towards the operator. The petrol is ejected through the central tube 3 of the nozzle which is centrally disposed within a tubular surround 1, the heavy oil being discharged from the space between the tubes and timed to commence just after the primary discharge of petrol, so that a sheath is formed surrounding the petrol. The petrol may be ignited at the target by means of a lighter comprising a textile head 6 soaked in petrol and a stem which is discharged from the nozzle after being ignited just prior to the discharge of the liquid. Alternatively the lighter may be disposed on the shield of the flame thrower just at the end of the nozzle and the head 6 is normally covered by a sleeve 9 retracted just prior to operation. The pressure container 14 comprises a cylindrical vessel having three interconnected cells, two of which 16, 17 contain petrol and heavy oil respectively while the third 15 contains bicarbonate solution and a vessel 19 containing sodium bisulphate solution which can be released for interaction with the bicarbonate solution so as to develop the necessary pressure to expel the liquids for burning from the cells 16, 17, through the supply pipes 27<1> and 28<1> respectively.
