[Class 144 (i)] Slipping-preventing attachments to wheels.- Wheels for tractor and like vehicles are fitted with pivoted strakes which are withdrawn into inoperative position by ratchet mechanism actuated by the wheel rotation and automatically projected into operative position, after release of the ratchet device, by the reaction of a spring. As shown applied to a twin wheel a, b, the strakes are journaled near their inner ends in a channel ring c fast with the wheels, and at their, inner ends in a second channel ring g loose on the ring c. Freely mounted alongside the ring g is a collar o through which pass rocking levers i, k adapted respectively to actuate the operating-pawl o<1> and a holding-pawl o<3> pivoted on the collar o and co-operating with racks o<2>, o<4> on the ring g. The levers i, k, are pivoted in lugs l on the ring c and project from the inner side of the wheel to abut selectively a stop n on a manually-adjustable crank m carried by a fixed part of the vehicle. In the full-line position shown in Fig. 1, the lever i is rocked on each rotation of the wheel to give a step-by-step angular movement to the ring g whereby the strakes are retracted. When fully withdrawn, the lever i is moved by a spring i' into a recess g' in the ring g so as to clear the stop n. To project the strakes, the crank m is adjusted to bring the stop n into the path of the projecting end of the lever k to effect angular movement of a block q by which the pawls o', o' are freed. A spring h then reacts to reverse the movement of the ring g thereby rocking the strakes into operative position.
