Abstract

[Class 144 (i)] Wheels for tractor and like vehicles are fitted with pivoted strakes movable into and out of ground-engaging position by mechanism comprising a pair of tappets carried by the wheel which are adapted selectively to co-operate with a manually-operated, trip-member, the relative movements of the tappets into and out of operative position being automatically synchronized. As shown, the strakes d are pivoted on a sleeve c mounted on the hub b of a disc a which is secured to the wheel hub and enclosed by a cover-plate e. The tappetmembers comprise bell-crank levers g<SP>2</SP>, h<SP>2</SP> which are carried by concentric rings g', h<SP>1</SP> and moved into operative position. A sleeve o angularly-movable on the hub b carries a forked arm o<SP>1</SP> engaged by a pin o<SP>2</SP> projecting from the ring g<SP>1</SP>. A cam p<SP>3</SP> on the sleeve o co-operates with a double pawl p<SP>1</SP>, p<SP>2</SP>. for locking the strakes in operative or inoperative position. The selective actuation of the rings g', h' is effected by a trip member shown as a block f<SP>1</SP> which is radially-movable into the path of the lever on 'the desired ring through a parallel-link device and a hand-lever f<SP>2</SP>. In action, for ejection of the, strakes, the control-block f<SP>1</SP> is moved into the path of the outer lever g<SP>2</SP> to arrest the movement of the ring g<SP>1</SP> the arm o' thereby disengaging the pawl p<SP>1</SP>. The pin o<SP>2</SP> traversing the slot o<SP>3</SP> in the disc a causes ejection of the strakes which are automatically locked by the pawl p<SP>2</SP>. A lever l then rides a cam l<SP>1</SP> to disengage a holding-pawl and free the lever g<SP>2</SP> to clear the block f<SP>1</SP> in the further rotation of the wheel. At the same time, the tail of the lever h<SP>2</SP> will be re-set by its control-cam k into position for engagement by the block f<SP>1</SP> when the latter is moved to effect retraction of the strakes. In this movement, the ring h<SP>1</SP> will be arrested and, through a pinion n meshing with pins n<SP>2</SP>, n<SP>3</SP> on the rings, the ring g' will be moved to free the pawl p<SP>2</SP>. When the pin 0 reaches the end of the slot o<SP>3</SP>, the sleeve c will be turned to effect retraction of the strakes and re-setting of the lever g<SP>2</SP>. Specification 578,256 is referred to.
