[Class 36] [Also in Group XXIII] Relates to the method of sealing an electric conductor into a quartz vessel, as described in Specification 489,630, in which one or more strips of metal are first sealed between a core of quartz and a tube which is collapsed on to it. According to the present invention, an assembly prepared in this way is sealed into a quartz envelope 1, the arrangement being such that one end 11 of a tubular core 5 projects into the interior of the envelope the bore of the core is blocked by a barrier 10 at a point outside the wall of the envelope, and the inner ends 7 of the conductors emerge from the core at a point within the envelope. In making the seal, the core 5 is inserted in a tubular extension 2 of the envelope, and the outer end 3 of the extension is sealed to the core, the collapse being extended beyond the barrier 10.
