Abstract
525,772. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Feb. 28, 1939, No. 6592. [Class 39 (i)] A thermionic electrode, particularly for highpressure metal vapour discharge devices, of the type in which activating material, such as alkaline earth silicates, is contained in a perforated thick-walled canister of refractory metal, part at least of the wall of the canister is a helix of wire, not less than 15 m.m. thick wound with a pitch not exceeding 150 per cent on a mandrel whose diameter is less than twice the diameter of the wire. The pitch is preferably as near 100 per cent as possible and the diameter of the wire greater than 5 m.m. In the example shown a stick 7 of alkaline earth silicate is surrounded by a helix 1 consisting of seven turns of tungsten wire .9 m.m. in diameter close-wound on a mandrel 1 m.m. in diameter. The helix is closed at one end by a plug 8 consisting of a helix of tungsten wire .35 m.m. in diameter wound on a .5 m.m. mandrel with a pitch of 150 per cent The other end of the helix is closed by a rod 2 of tungsten, 4 m.m. long, welded to molybdenum strips 3, 4 and lead 5.. Quartz 6 is collapsed on to the parts 2 .. 5 so as to form the seal. Additional helices may be disposed outside or inside or both.
