Abstract
576,888. Gas condensers. POWER-GAS CORPORATION, Ltd., and RIXON, F. F. May 9, 1944, No. 8793. [Class 55 (ii)] A water-cooled gas condenser comprises vertical tubes 13 connecting top and bottom water chambers 3, 4, and encased within a shell 1 divided by one or more vertical baffle plates 2 into two or more gas passes having additional horizontal or slightly inclined baffles 14, the water chambers being subdivided by transverse plates 5, 6 and partitions 7-12 so as to provide for final cooling of a countercurrent flow of gas and water in one or more gas passes and for initial cooling a number of up and down water passes in the first or in each of the first and remaining gas passes. Hot gas enters by a bottom inlet 15 travelling across the tubes between the horizontal baffles and over baffle 2 when it descends to an outlet 16. Cooling water enters by an inlet 17 and rising to the top water chamber passes through an opening 25 in plate 5, thence downwardly to the bottom chamber following an up and down course within the final gas pass to an outlet 18. Clearances between the water tubes and baffles 14 allow condensed water and tar to collect at the base for removal through outlets 21, 22. The top water chamber may be open or have a cover and the bottom chamber may be detachable or have a detachable bottom plate. The condenser may be cylindrical divided into two equal gas passes, the water chambers being subdivided by partitions at an angle to the central division plates.
