[Class 103 (i)] In wheel brakes of the type comprising brake shoes radially movable against spring action by a distensible member disposed between the shoes and an annular support through apertures in which extend lugs or the like secured to the shoes, the shoes are metallic and heat insulating blocks are positionad between them and the support. As shown, metallic shoes 5 provided with lugs 4 extending through apertures 3 in the annular support 1 are arranged to be expanded into contact with a brake drum by a distensible rubber or metallic member 7, against the action of a spring 6 which engages the lugs 4. Each shoe 5 is secured to a heat insulating block 8 which is recessed to engage torque-taking projections 2 formed on the support 1. The lower edges of the shoe ends 10 are inturned to enter recesses in the ends of the block 8. The shoes 5 are narrower than the blocks 8 and there is clearance in the apertures 3 between the lugs 4 and the support 1, so that the shoes may not contact and damage the support which may be made of light and relatively soft alloy. In a modification, the members 4 are in the form of pins each secured to the block 8 by a conical head and attached at the lower end to the spring 6. The brake surface of the shoes and the drum may be of sintered metal.
