Abstract

637,811. Internally expanding brakes. HOPPENSTAND BRAKE CORPORATION. May 1, 1947, No. 11710. Convention date, May 3, 1946. [Class 103 (i)] An internally-expanding brake of the type operated by an annular fluid - distensible element, is characterised principally in that the braking elements 21, Fig. 10, are arranged to have initially a radius of curvature greater or less than the brake drum, so that they are first raised into contact with the drum and then flexed so as to progressively increase the area of surface contact. The inflatable member 20 is secured between two fixed plates 22 which have annular ribs 22d that engage in corresponding grooves 20a in the member 20, the lower thickened parts 20b thereof being firmly secured. The segmental brake elements 21 are secured to the outer face of the inflatable member 20 and are normally spaced away from the rotating drum 18. Inflation of the member 20 first raises the brake elements so that their ends contact the drum 18 and flexes them to the same curvature. The inflatable element may be made with one or more internal ribs 26a, 26b or 26c, as in Fig. 6. Lugs 24 on the outer rims of the plates 22 are arranged to engage notches 24a in the edges of the elements 21 to prevent rotation thereof.
