Abstract

576,904. Clutches. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Oct. 17, 1944, No. 20020. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a brake or clutch of the kind wherein the friction elements are moved radially into contact with a brake drum or other complementary friction member by an inflatable element, the said element is provided with projections and recesses which mate with recesses and projections in the surface of the brake shoes or corresponding clutch parts, and of the stationary support. As shown, the inflatable element 5 is of annular form and bars 5a are provided on both the internal and external faces, the two sets of bars being relatively staggered. The element 5 is carried by a support 6a, of channel shape in cross section, integral with the stationary back plate 6. The support 6a is correspondingly barred and recessed at 6c, 6d, and the brake shoes 7 are similarly shaped at 7a, 7b. Annular coiled springs 8 are received in inwardly inclined grooves 7c in the shoes which are thus maintained in yielding contact with the element 5. According to the Provisional Specification, the inflatable element may consist of inflatable segments in butt-ended relation, and the element may be anchored by a plurality of studs, instead of by projections.
