Abstract
576,705. Locking nuts. CRAWLEY, C. R. June 17, 1944, No. 11564. [Class 89 (i)] A self-locking nut 1, Fig. 1 is counterbored at 2 to receive a small circular nut 3 with its underside inclined at a substantial angle to the bottom of the counterbore. The nut 3 is retained in the nut 1 by a spring ring 4 or by other means such as by turning over the lip of the nut 1. The unturned end of the ring 4 engages a step or projection on the nut 3 to limit rotation and hold the parts in correct position for screwing on to a bolt. Unscrewing is prevented by the inclined bottom of the nut 3 engaging the bottom of the counterbore and tilting the nut to jam it. The nut 3 may be split at its thinnest part and it is provided on its top surface with recesses or projections for engagement by a tool when removal is required. In a modification the nut 3 is retained by the heads 9<1>, Fig. 5, of screws and a hole 10 drilled in part in the nut 1 and in part in the nut 3 serves to receive a locking peg for use in unscrewing.
