Abstract
555,608. Self locking nuts. BENNETT, C. G. M., and PRESSOTURN Ltd. Feb. 26, 1942, No. 2520. [Class 89 (i)] Thin sheet metal nuts have.holes that enable them to pass freely over the bolt but are variously arranged so that in the locking position they are tilted to engage the bolts at diametrically opposite but axially displaced points. A nut 1, Fig. 1, has a bent down lug 2. The aperture in the nut is preferably such as to form a sharp edge 3. The nut passes freely over the screw 4, in the position shown on the upper part of the Figure; till the edge of the lug 2 contacts the nick 5, the nut then tilts into engagement with the thread and a part turn effects tightening. In another form the nut is bent to a segment of a cylinder 6, Fig. 4, and the hole is offset from the centre giving the effect of unequal legs. The sheet metal may be otherwise folded to produce unequal legs. The nut may be a section of a cylinder with a thin internal flange 13 and one face inclined to the axis. The cylinder may be of plastic material with a thin sheet metal insert to form the flange. A flat sheet metal nut may have a transverse screw on one side to take the place of the lug 2. In a further modification a nut similar to Fig. 1 is employed in inverted position, the free end of the lug 2 engaging the thread in the locked position. The hole need not be circular but may be of diamond or other shape.
