[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for making or finishing dies &c. by copying from a model, comprises a tracer and a grinding-tool, rotary file or milling- cutter, disposed one above the other, and carried by parts movable in all directions or in two planes at right angles, so that the tracer and the tool may be moved in any direction in unison. The machine comprises a support 1 for the work-piece 4 disposed immediately beneath a platform 2 carrying the model 3, a tracer 5 operating on the work being carried respectively by the outer ends of upper and lower horizontal arms 8, 9. These arms are fixed at their inner ends to a vertical rod 10 mounted on ball bearings 11 in collars 12, 13 separated by a distance sleeve 14, and provided with lugs 12a, 13a, pivoted by ball bearings to the forward ends of two parallel links 15, 16, movable in a vertical plane about ball bearing pivots on lugs 17a, 18a on collars &c. similar to the collars &c. 12a, 13a supported by a vertical rod 19 carried by a fixed pillar 22. The grinding-tool 5 is carried by the vertical shaft of an electric motor 27 secured to a ring- like holder 28 on the arm 9, and the tracer 6 is held in a collet 29 with a split conical end 30 engaging the coned end of a sleeve 31, and secured by a nut 32. The sleeve 31 is housed in two spaced collars 33, 33a, separated by a slot 34 and forming part of a carrier 35 attached to the arm 8 ; the sleeve is threaded externally and engaged by a nut 36 lying in the slot 34, whereby the tracer 6 may be adjusted axially. The carrier 35 terminates in a boss 35a having screwed thereon a ring 38, and secured to a part 8a on the end of the arm 8 by a screwed cap 39 ; the parts 8a, 35a are formed with interengaging ribs 40 and grooves 41, whereby the tracer may be set in any of four positions, the grinding-tool being similarly adjustable on the end of the arm 9. The work and the pattern or model may be held in position by straps or bars, or the table 1 and the platform 2 each may be provided with a holder adjustable in two directions. The arms 8, 9 normally may be kept in raised position by a spring 45 which may be anchored at its lower end to either of two lugs 48, 49 on the link 16, and at its upper end in one or other of several holes 46 in a part 47 on the sleeve 21. The tracer may be carried by the lower arm, and the grinding-tool by the upper arm.
