Abstract
576,103. Automatic gain control. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CHERRY, E. C. Dec. 18, 1942, No. 18050. [Class 40 (v)] In a wireless receiver designed for signals consisting of short pulses of carrier-frequency energy, automatic gain control is effected by use of part of a tuning indicator tube of the cathode-ray type as a D.C. amplifier of the rectified potential from a diode detector. The diode V4 is fed with pulses from an anode bend rectifier valve V2, via condenser C3 and resistance R4. The D.C. potential appearing across the diode load, comprising resistance R and capacitance C, is applied between grid and cathode of the tuning indicator tube V3. The gain control voltage for the early stages of the receiver is taken off across a resistance R2 connected in the cathode lead of the tube V3, a suitable standing bias being maintained by connecting the lower end of the resistance R2 to a source of negative potential. The ganged switches S1, S2 are arranged to be normally open, so that AVC is operative ; on closing the switches, the AVC is put out of action and the tuning indicator target T connected in circuit.
