Abstract

542,030. Automatic volume control. PHILCO RADIO & TELEVISION CORPORATION. May 22, 1940, No. 9077. Convention date, June 17, 1939. [Class 40 (v)] A degenerative plate rectifier is arranged so that negative A.V.C. potential may be taken direct from the anode. As shown in Fig. 1, the output from the signal transfer means 2, for example an intermediate frequency amplifier, is applied to a pentode 3 arranged as a degenerator plate rectifier. The detected output is taken across a cathode load resistance 4 having a byepass condenser 5, The anode is connected to earth through a resistance 7, anode circuit power being supplied by a source 6. Thus the anode is always negative with respect to earth and is increasingly negative with an increased signal. This gives a suitable negative A.V.C. voltage which is applied from the anode of pentode 3 to the grids of the valves in the earlier stages, after smoothing by resistance 8 and condenser 9. Since the total cathode current is substantially independent of the plate potential this arrangement does not affect the detection. Modifications are described in which delay is introduced by a suitably biased diode connected across impedance 7 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). Specification 540,454 is referred to.
